    Ow.
    N) Walked into a door, the door being closed at nighttime due to special circumstances which weren't remembered until immediately after walking into the door. A significant amount of blood has been collected from the point of greatest pain on our left cheek. The sensation of pain isn't that great compared to some, and it probably is a reasonable thing to undergo once or so in a lifetime. ...though hopefully as the lifetimes stack up, the rate of occurrence will go down. Maa, even if it doesn't... well, we'll see how it works out.

    Can't hold a tissue to our face and type at the same time, inconveniently. Ah, well; by this time the pain has lessened considerably.

    Oh, oh, oh!
    The other day, I heard Ana singing "Sally Ann the Camel", so I mentioned it to Jenn today. And Ana sang it for us - "Sally an' the camel have so-and-so-many humps!"

    Her version makes more sense to her, I'm sure, because the chorus runs "So ride, Sally, ride, boom boom boom" and "ride" makes more sense if Sally is with a camel, not if Sally is the camel herself. Unless we can use ride the other way, of course.

    ~~~~~~~~~
    Not much later, I put the nieces to nap while Jenn cleaned my floor (a fair and equitable arrangement, to be sure), and Evangeline ran (ambled quickly, anyway) into the room. "Connie! Dis is MOMMY'S room! And I runned in Mommy's room!"
    "You ran in Mommy's room?"
    "No. I wunned."
    "Okay."
    "Wunned, Connie. Pee, eff. WUN. Dat's how you pell it. Pee, eff. RUNNED." (The actual sound is inbetween a "w" and a "r", hard to explain unless you know kids.)
    ~~~~~~~~~

    So after reading their stories and putting Evangeline down, I go to put Ana down. First, I write a short story for her, line by line - "Sam is sad. Sam is not bad. Sam is in bed."

    And guess who read it without any help at all? (Which is no small feat considering the state of my handwriting at times!)

    So we read another story together after that, and chatted a bit as she went to nap.

    Oh, I love the nieces :)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Edit: Oh, here's an interesting one. My mother came home today (yay!) and the girls went out in the garden with her. Ana has been tantrum-tastic today, so first it was an upset that she couldn't go out in her play shoes but had to use an actual pair of shoes (the horror), and then it was that Evangeline could not go out in her (Ana's) pajama pants. Well, Evangeline has been wearing Ana's pajama pants all day, and almost certainly put them on at Ana's instigation (she's not that good at dressing herself yet, and Ana does push her into wearing her (Ana's) clothes). But when I pointed this out to Ana she argued, knowing that the facts weakened her position. So first it was that she didn't know (impossible, as this has been going on all day, did I say that?) and then that she just didn't see, because, and I quote, "I haven' looken at her yet, I've been rocking!" (The 't was dropped when she said it.)
    This is noticeable not just for her statement that apparently she's been rocking all day long (yeah, right), but for her use of -en on a verb that usually doesn't do that. (I want to do that all the time too, but I don't.)
    Tim G. left an excellent comment on my post about the XP reward vs. Risk in RPG games. That post is a little old and the conversation has trailed off, so I thought I’d quote it here. Also, it’s always nice when I can just have visitors write my posts for me:
    Argh! Will someone explain to me why the nectarines I bought, unripe, labelled 'ripen in fruit bowl' have all collapsed into a soggy, mouldy mess two days later?!
    They were on top of the microwave for that time. Woah, wait. That's not possible, is it? O_o
    ION, squirrel fur is making me rip my own out.
    Hate the weird name things.
    N) When on another account, the folder appears as '[account name]'s Documents'. When on [account name], the folder appears as 'My Documents'. When on a different account, when moving from one point to another, copied. '[new account name]'s Documents'. Now, I find that it's left that name as it is even when logged in, and created a new, empty 'My Documents' folder. Found that out when Halo was started and all information was gone.
    The 'My Documents' one is a system folder, and the other isn't. The only difference between them in the properties other than the size is that the one which isn't as a Customize tab. ...which it seems can't be used to change its status in that respect.
    Very irritating. Copied all files across to the other folder and will proceed to delete the old folder, but it's not the ideal solution.
    Whee, brain-pretzel.
    N) A mistake of not realising that the paragraph from the game just resumed hadn't been entered, and reading the last paragraph from the last game played thinking that it applied to the currently-viewed game's character... an unusual experience, much like a balloon of shock exponentially inflating from a slow start and then popping. Probably lengthier than it might have been due to the time taken to check and register the meaning of each part, instead of taking in and realising the basis behind the whole sentence at a glance.
    Edit: N) *laughter* '[sigh]... nanodesu...' (where 'desu' is pronounced as 'de'+'su' instead of 'des', and '[sigh]' is 'ha' with a small 'u' after it.) Amusing to see the unnecessary sentence suffix added even after something as short and... well, non-verbal... as that.
    Second edit: N) *blinks* Somehow, from reading about food-preparation the air now tastes of milk.
    N) Vivid dreams. Possibly weird. Will not attempt to recount, though from what can remembered of the later parts some influences have been identified.
    Boredom causes people to break the Spore Creature Creator
    So, in my massive amounts of downtime in the labs while I watch over the kids at this camp again, I have been playing a lot with the Spore Creature Creator. It works well because it's not like a game where anything bad happens if I have to step away every 5 minutes when a kid asks me some inevitable question.
    I had stopped for a long while though, having grown bored with it already. Once I had mastered more complicated techniques like double-bodies and puppets, there wasn't much to play with until I would get the full version, which I don't want to pay for until, y'know, I get the actual game with it.
    But today one of my students figured out accidentally how to make a floating head, and so I started it up to try to get the glitch to work for me.
    Once having gotten that to work, and further weirdness to result from it, I decided to make the most glitched-out, awful creature I could.
    It resulted in this lovely abomination I named "Epic Failure":
    "Epic Failure" features many appendages passing through one another causing the mesh to stretch because it can't figure out which bone to attach to, as well as a floating head which itself has floating spike-balls and eyes failing to attach at all to it. The head is technically (invisibly) attached to one of it's... "arms".. which makes it act extra strangely. You can't see it well in the video but the way I made its two sets of feet in the same location causes it to walk very strangely with the mesh-stretching issue. Finally I gave it some of the goofiest parts (duck feet, random elbow feathers and a fish-flipper) and a horrifying paint scheme: brown-yellow scales with hot-pink cow-blotches and bright green spots.
    I kept looking around on youtube though and found some completely insane glitch-creatures people have made that totally blow mine away.
    Like this one, for example.
    ...or THIS one.
    Or w-t-f is even going ON in THIS ONE?!?!?!
    What IS that?! And you can see where the mating calls are emanating from but yet still somehow have no idea where they're coming from!!! WHAT?!
    Yes, this was a very nerdy entry on glitches in the Spore Creature Creator. You can go about your business.
    I've been reading the TVTropes site a lot this week.
    Intentionally, I might add, though I'm not sure if that makes it better or worse.
    All this reading brings me to one crucial question. Is there anything new any of us can do when it comes to telling a story? Because damn if that site isn't insanely comprehensive!
    So Guitar Hero is... fairly awesome. Definitely addictive, but maybe a bit hard. Simon's far better at it than me, but he gets very frustrated with it too. As games go, there's challenging and there's just being so hard that it's not fun to play anymore. Easy mode is boring, Medium is only just manageable in places and Hard and Extreme are just... too much effort. Don't get me wrong, I was hooked from the moment When You Were Young came up, but it all went a bit downhill from there. The songs just... aren't that good. There should be more classics in there. I think that's my main problem with it, the game is called 'Legends of Rock', but there's only a handful of songs in there that most people know, and they're the only fun ones to play. I'm looking forward to the DS one, it looks like it has a better selection, but the controls, I think, will be a huge pain in the ass.
    I was looking at the Sonic Channel blog just now, saw these shirts
    Can anyone provide a translation, or more importantly, a way to get these shirts?
    Note: I may be misremembering certain terms.
    N) Main road. Allowed speed fifty miles per hour. One-lane single carriageway (?). Hearse plus funerial procession of cars moving at ten miles per hour. For about two miles (at least that we were present for, though be aware that an exact measurement of distance is not present) before they turned aside down a side street to a crematorium.
    After the hearse and the few cars following, a huge backed-up near-traffic-jam (or does it count as a traffic jam?) of cars, including the one containing us, with completely clear road all the way after the hearse.
    Presumably no more needs to be said.
    N) Managed to get up in response to the alarm at 7:30 this morning (or rather were woken at 7:30, and got out of bed in the longer-term at 7:34 when the alarm beeped again).
    Galactic Civilisations 2: very interesting experience. Significant is that the ability to delegate is desired and not present, in that both the sending out of colony ships and the building-up of worlds is troublesome that one tends not to like to do it and stops with a number of worlds that put one at a disadvantage. Hmm.
    They're constantly running articles on the subject. Well, frequently anyway.
    This one is very cute, and really, being in picture format, defies being copypasted. You have to click to read.
    In other news, the CSA was today.
    In addition to our egg share (dozen eggs) and our fruit share (quart of cherries, 12 oz of apple juice) we got the following:
    Two lg lettuces
    10 small onions with greens
    22 oz. chard (I only took a pound - how much chard can a girl eat? The leftover is all donated to a food bank)
    10 squash
    10 cucumbers
    10 oz baby greens
    2 napa cabbages
    Holy crap that's a lot of greenery. I do believe the phrase "om nom nom" is appropriate now?
    Ugh. Went to the zoo today, met with the dregs of humanity.
    1. To the woman with the stroller - don't project your unhappiness over taking so long to get up the stairs on *me*. My standing there is not the same as "having a problem" with you. If you've got a chip on your shoulder about that, I suggest you keep it to yourself. I don't really have the patience for overgrown children.
    2. To the huge swarm of tourists going westward when I was trying to go northward - look, I appreciate that "everybody is trying to walk", even if "walking" means, apparently, "proceeding at the pace of molasses". Fine. But meanwhile, *I* am trying to cross the street before I lose the light! The phrase "excuse me" is perfectly acceptable in this situation, and does not make me a "bitch". Fucking tourist.
    3. To the man in the train station - there's always another train. Especially at rush hour. Yes. Yes, really. There's absolutely no need to run down the stairs... and if you *insist* on running, you need to be more careful, sir. There is definitely no need to bump into others. On the stairs. Nearly knocked me down.
    Ugh. Not the sort of thing I want to deal with all in one day :(
They are wonderfully uplifting, smile-inducing videos, even for the pessimists among us :) As I saw one commenter say, "Wow. That shut up even my inner cynic for a couple of hours."
